Living in La Línea
Everything you need to know about daily life, from costs and healthcare to schools and transport.
Cost of Living
La Línea offers some of the most affordable living costs in southern Spain. A one-bedroom apartment in the centre typically rents for around 500 to 700 euros per month, while groceries, dining out, and utilities are considerably cheaper than neighbouring Gibraltar or the Costa del Sol. Many Gibraltar workers live in La Línea to take advantage of the lower costs while earning in pounds sterling.
Healthcare
Spain has a highly regarded public healthcare system. As a registered resident (empadronado), you can access the local health centre (Centro de Salud) and the Hospital de La Línea. Private healthcare is also available at competitive rates. Pharmacies are well-stocked and pharmacists can advise on minor ailments, which is common practice in Spain.
Education
La Línea has a range of public (colegios) and semi-private (concertados) schools. For English-language education, several international schools operate in the Campo de Gibraltar area. The University of Cadiz also has facilities nearby in Algeciras, and there are vocational training centres in the city.
Transport
The city is well connected by bus to Algeciras, Malaga, and Seville. The border crossing to Gibraltar is walkable from the centre. For air travel, Gibraltar Airport is a five-minute walk across the frontier, with flights to London and Manchester. Malaga Airport, about 90 minutes by car, offers a much wider range of international connections.
Language
Spanish is the primary language, with a distinct Andalusian accent. However, given the proximity to Gibraltar, English is widely understood in many businesses, especially those frequented by cross-border workers. Learning some Spanish will significantly enrich your experience and help with day-to-day admin like banking and utilities.
Registration & Admin
If you plan to live in La Línea, you will need to register on the padron (municipal register) at the town hall. EU citizens can apply for a TIE (tarjeta de identidad de extranjero) residency card. Non-EU citizens will need a visa. A gestor (administrative agent) can help navigate Spanish bureaucracy and is well worth the small fee.
